Sterling vs Freeman
Tuesday Evening
Last Tuesday the Lady Jets of Sterling hosted the Freeman Lady Falcons. The jets came out on fire in the first quarter, led by junior Courtney VanGroningen and her 6 of 9 shooting which led to an 18 – 9 lead for the lady jets after one. Sterling also forced nine turnovers during the quarter. The second quarter was an evenly fought quarter, with both teams scoring twelve points. The lady jets took a 30 – 21 lead into halftime. The third quarter was not a scoring reel highlight, but the jets used their fullcourt man to man defense to force twelve turnovers. By the end of the third quarter, the lady jets had stretched the lead out to 41-29. In the fourth quarter the lady jets scored early and often and with 3:55 left to play had a commanding lead of 51 – 30. Freeman then scored some late baskets to close the scoring out, with Sterling winning 53-41. Coach Cockerill said, “Our girls played with some enthusiasm tonight. That first quarter was a lot of fun to watch, when Courtney got the hot hand our girls found her and she did the rest. I thought Coach Andreasen did a nice job of having his girls ready to play. I looked at the clock in the first quarter thinking that we were way up and it was only 11-7, I thought oh boy this one is going to be a battle. I was also glad to see our girls come out in the third and fourth quarters and stretch the lead up to 21 points, so we could let some other young players get some needed varsity time.” Sterling finished the regular season 14-7 and will play Tuesday evening in Fairbury for their first game in Sub-District against the winner of Bruning/Davenport and Shickley game on Monday.
