Sterling Lady Jets vs Nebraska City Lourdes

This was a rematch from last Friday at the MUDECAS Tournament, a game which Sterling won 44-32.  This game was a struggle for both teams both mentally and physically.  NCL started out shooting well making four shots in the first quarter to take a lead after one of 10-8.  During that span both teams had problems controlling the basketball.  Each team had a dozen turnovers during the first quarter.  Sterling cranked up their play in the second quarter, forcing ten more turnovers and turning a first quarter deficit into a 27 – 19 halftime lead.  The third and fourth quarters were played pretty evenly.  Each team would make small runs and then the other team would answer back.  Sterling won the game 44 – 36.  Coach Cockerill stated, “ This game was rough for both teams, we must have had four stoppages for blood on players.  I think some of the reason was we just played each other and both had tough games the night before.  The ladies seemed a little tired and this led to many turnovers for both teams.  We will be working on fundamentals in practice next week, but that is not much different than normal.”

Sterling was led by junior Courtney VanGroningen and her 17 points and 5 steals.  NCL was led Haley Kreifels and her 10 points.  Sterling plays Tuesday at home against HTRS, Thursday at home against Sindey, IA and Friday at Lewiston.
