Friday December 11th.
Sterling Lady Jets played host to 3-0 Diller-Odell. This game was to be interesting for both teams with the snow storm that blew threw and cancelled school for three days. Neither team would get a chance to practice although Diller-Odell did play a game the night before. I think both coaches thought there might be a lid on the basket and it turn out to be quite the opposite. Diller jumped out to a quick 16 – 11 lead in the first quarter with balanced scoring form five different girls, while freshman Jenna Nieveen scored six points in the quarter to help keep the lady jets close. The second quarter the lady jets came roaring back to tie the game at 30 -30 at halftime. The quarter was dominated by the shooting of sophomore guard Nicole Wenzl, scoring ten or her game high twenty-one points in this quarter. Both teams came out on fire in the third quarter with Sterling scoring seventeen points and Diller-Odell scoring 15 points. During this quarter junior Courtney VanGroningen put in seven points for the lady jets and Brianna Hajek and Hillary Kostal each scored five points for Diller-Odell. So after three quarters it was Sterling 47, Diller-Odell 45. The lead flip-flopped back and forth during the fourth quarter with Sterling holding a five point lead with 2:53 left in the game. Sterling missed a three point attempt and Hillary Kostal answered with a three point shot for Diller-Odell. Diller then had some good hustle plays and took the lead for good. Diller-Odell wins the game 67-61. Coach Cockerill stated, “I was surprised how many points each team put up tonight with the big layoff from the snow storm. Diller-Odell has a real athletic team with good overall height and speed. I thought our girls played extremely good basketball tonight and just missed finishing at the end. We are a very young team with not much of any height, but our speed, quickness and heart will always keep us in games.” Diller-Odell was led by Morgan Vitosh and her 19 points with Hillary Kostal adding 12. Sterling was paced by Nicole Wenzl with her 21 points and 5 of 8 shooting beyond the arc, followed by Jenna Niveen and Cournter Vangroningen adding 16 and 14 respectively.
