Sterling @ Johnson/Brock
Sterling traveled down the road to Johnson to take on the Johnson/Brock lady eagles. The game turned out to be a dog fight between two young basketball teams. Johnson/Brock jumped all over Sterling in the first quarter 17-8. They did by breaking Sterling’s press and getting the ball inside. Erin Johnson and Kay Fisher led Johnson/Brock in the first quarter with six and four points respectively. The second quarter was fought fairly evenly with the lady eagles outscoring the lady jets 13-12. So Johnson went into halftime with a 30-20 lead. Coach Cockerill stated, “I thought Coach Richardson had her girls ready to go, I told our ladies before the game that this would be a tough game because their coach would have them ready and she more than had them ready. I was thankful to only be down ten at half. If it wasn’t for a nice bounce pass from Alexa Magill to Reba Hestermann for a bucket and a foul we would have been down thirteen. At halftime, we talked about how we had to chip away at the lead and get it to a level we could make a run in the fourth. We definitely came out the second half a little better in our efforts.”
The third quarter the lady jets turned up the heat, forcing ten turnovers and converting on those opportunities with some of them being from the free-throw line. Cockerill said, “ I thought we played hard the third quarter and it was a total team effort. At the of the quarter I looked at the scoreboard, saw we were down five points and told the starters to check back in, four girls went to the score clock. Our subs played a big role in the comeback.” The lady jets then made a furious run to get the game tied with about a minute and a half left. The game came down to which team would make the plays down the stretch and the lady eagles pulled it off. Johnson won the game 52-49. Cockerill also said, “We had quite a few chance all the way to the last shot, where Courtney VanGroningen got of about a 23 foot shot at the buzzer. I told the girls I was proud of their effort to try and we stayed in the game with defense to try and overcome our 20% shooting form the field, but we need to get better.” Johnson/Brock was led by Kayla Alberts and her 12 points. Sterling was led by freshman Jenna Nieveen and her 14 points. Sterling plays HTRS on Friday and Sidney, IA on Saturday, both are home games for the jets.
