Sterling 46 Falls City Sacred Heart 6
After taking a 14-6 lead into the halftime break, the Sterling Jets exploded for 32 unanswered points in the 2nd half during action Friday night in Sterling.
The Jets got the scoring started on the night a 6 yard run by Zach Lempka. The PAT was converted by Jake Wirthele. The Irish answered back later in the opening quarter with Clayton Vonderschmidt taking one in from 7 yards out. The PAT run failed. The score stood at 8-6 heading into the 2nd quarter.
Defense was the name of the game in the 2nd quarter as both teams offenses had trouble moving the football. The Jets special teams did get one score during the quarter when Colin VanGroningen took a punt 51 yards to the house. The PAT run was unsuccessful. The score stood at 14-6 heading into halftime.
The Jets offense got going early in the 3rd quarter when Justin Puls plowed one in from 2 yards out. He also converted the PAT. Puls came right back on the Jets next possession and again scored from 2 yards out. He again ran in the PAT. The Jets took a 30-6 lead into the 4th quarter.
Sterling finished up the night's scoring with 2 more scores in the 4th quarter. The first score came through the air when Austin Magill found Lempka open from 5 yards out. Puls added his 3rd PAT of the night following the score. Lempka found the endzone for the 3rd time on the night to finish off the scoring when he blasted one in from 2 yards out. VanGroningen ran in the PAT. The final score was Sterling 46 Falls City Sacred Heart 6.
Puls led all rushers for the game with 109 yards on 22 carries. Jet rushers helping out Puls were Wirthele 52 yards on 11 carries, Lempka 40 yards on 8 carries, Michael Lucas 8 yards on 3 carries, Magill 5 yards on 3 carries, and VanGroningen 4 yards on 3 carries. Magill was 2 of 5 passing for 19 yards. Jake Wenzl had 1 reception for 14 yards and Lempka had 1 reception for 5 yards.
Leading the Jets defensive effort on the night were as follows: Neil Pella 5 tackles, 3 assists, VanGroningen 5 tackles, 2 assists, Shane Benson 4 tackles, 7 assists, 2 quarterback sacks, Puls 2 tackles, 8 assists, Jake Wenzl 2 tackles, 3 assists, 1 quarterback sack, Lempka 1 tackle, 7 assists, 1/2 quarterback sack, Magill 1 tackle, Wirthele 1 tackle, John Parrish 4 assists, 1/2 quarterback sack, 1 blocked punt, and Allan Parrish 1 assist and 1 fumble recovery.
" Our defense did a great job the whole ballgame. We gave up the one touchdown, otherwise we completely shut down their offense. Justin Puls did a yeoman job of filling in for a banged up Jake Wirthele. He just got back from a hand injury, and showed that he can get the job done when his name is called. Our return game did a fine job on the night as well. We put together a complete ballgame for the first time this season, and it came at just the right time with the district title on the line. We will use our bye this week to fine tune a few things and give the kids some much deserved time off to heal up."
Sterling's next contest is slated for Friday, Oct. 23rd at Lewiston. Game time is 7:00 pm.
