SUB DISTRICTS

Sterling vs Parkview Christian.

Sterling Lady Jets defeated Parkview Christian 62-32 in the second round of sub-districts.  Sterling jumped out to a quick 15-2 lead in the first quarter.  By half-time they had stretched their lead to 27-6.  Many of these points came off of turnovers.  Sterling forced 31 turnovers for the game.  Kala Weber and Courtney VanGroningen led the Lady Jets in the first half with 10 points and 8 points respectively.  Coach Cockerill stated, “ I asked the ladies to come out with intensity on defense and get the game over early.  They did a great job of limiting shots and converting on turnovers.  Six points in a half against anyone is a good half of defense.”  The second half was much of the same on offense with the Lady jets outscoring Parkview 35-26 through the last two quarters.

Sterling was had very balanced scoring with ten girls scoring that evening, but were led by Kala Weber and her 14 points.  Parkview was led by Breanna Borrenpohl’s 12 points.

Sterling vs FCSH

FCSH defeated Sterling Lady Jets 58-29 in the sub district final.  FCSH jumped out to a quick 12-2 lead before the Lady Jets fought back to a 15-9 deficit after the first quarter.  McKenzie McAuliffe lead the first quarter charge with 5 points.  The second quarter was very defensive with both teams not making many shots and turning the basketball over quite often.  The Lady Jets even went into a stall game for the last 1:13 of the half, thought they were down 10 points.  Coach Cockerill stated, “We finished the second quarter 0 – 10 in our last ten possessions, so like we had talked all year in FCSH went into a zone, we were going to pull it out and keep the game close.  Our goal was to let them have only give up 10-12 points per quarter and at that point we were meeting our goal.”  The third quarter Sterling’s shooting woes continued, while FCSH started to heat up.  FCSH took a 37-17 lead after the third quarter.  Coach Cockerill stated “ I said to the girls after the third quarter that someone needed to step up and make some shots.  Our defense is right where we wanted it, but we needed to put the ball in the basket.  Being down so much we had to switch to straight man to man defense and their height and athleticism took over.  If the game was close we could have stayed in the box and one defense, but we did not make the shots early and that dictated what we had to do.”

The fourth quarter the Irish pulled away for the victory.  Sterling finished the year 11-10.  Coach Cockerill said, “ I truly enjoyed working with these young ladies.  They never quit in any game this year.  The competitiveness in the senior class in unbelievable.  I will miss their leadership and maybe more than that, just the quality of people they are.”
