Sterling at Lewiston (Saturday, Jan 25, 2008)

Sterling girls defeated Lewiston 45 – 29 at Lewiston.  Sterling jumped out to a quick lead in the first quarter 18-1.  The Lady Jets forced turnovers and were driving to the basket and getting fouled.  They made 10 out of 12 free-throws during the quarter.  Coach Cockerill said, “I was proud of the way our girls came out defensively in the first quarter.  They really set the tone for the game and allowed us to do some liberal substitutions throughout the other three quarters.  Allowing some of our younger players to get varsity action during the early quarters can be invaluable for the future.”    The second quarter Sterling controlled 14-9 for a 32 -10 halftime score.  Lewiston outscored Sterling through the last two quarter with some hard play, but the game was already in hand.  Sterling forced 22 turnovers and only lost the ball 14 times.  McKenzie McAuliffe led the team in rebounding with 7 and Kala Weber led the team in steals with 6.Sterling was led in scoring by Courtney VanGroningen and Kala Weber scoring 17 and 12 points respectively.  Lewiston was led by Katy Sisco’s 8 points.  Sterling plays Monday January, 25 against Lewiston in the first round of the Pioneer Conference Tournament.  The game will be held at 8:00 at Nebraska City Lourdes.  The winner will play Freeman girls at 6:30 on Tuesday at Lewiston.
