Nebraska City Lourdes at Sterling (Saturday, Jan 19, 2008)
Sterling girls defeated NCL girls 43 – 42 in one overtime Saturday evening. Sterling got off to a quick start outscoring NCL 13-6 in the first quarter. The second quarter both teams got into a little groove offensively and at half-time Sterling was holding a 25 -19 advantage.
The second half belong to NCL, they outscored Sterling 10-7 and 7-4 in each of the third and fourth quarters respectively. At the end of regulation they were tied at 36. In the overtime the teams traded scores and free-throws before McAuliffe found Weber under the basket, which led to Weber shooting free-throws. She made one of the two to take a one point lead with 14 seconds left. NCL ran the clock down and took a shot which was rebounded by NCL and time ran out before they could shoot again.
Coach Cockerill stated, “ I was proud of the way the girls finished the game. We had a few girls in foul trouble and they still played with aggression. It was really a game of two halves. We executed well in the first half and made easy passes which led to easy plays. The second half we forgot what had gotten us to the first half success and started trying to make the hard basketball plays which led to turnovers. We also only made 12 out of 32 free-throw attempts, which tells me our concentration level was not that high. But all in all a win against a C2 team is always a good win.”
Sterling was led by Kala Weber’s 10 points and McKenzie McAuliffe and Stephanie Heusman each pitch in 8 points. NCL was led by Gawart’s 10 points and Rickman and E. Brink each added 10 points.
Sterling plays at Lewiston on Friday, Jan. 25th.
