STERLING - In a tough defensive struggle, Sterling’s Lady Jets made
their free throws down the stretch to earn a 36-23 win over Pawnee
City’s Lady Indians.
“It was a defensive struggle,” Sterling Head Coach John Cockerill
said.
He said it was a close game throughout. In the fourth quarter
Sterling’s pressure defense allowed them to get a lead and then
they made their free throws down the stretch, Cockerill said.
The Lady Jets lead the scoring 9-8 in the first quarter.
The game was tied at halftime after the Lady Indians led the
scoring 5-4 in the second quarter.
Pawnee City held an 18-16 lead heading into the fourth quarter
after outscoring Sterling 5-3 in the third quarter.
The Lady Jets took control in the fourth quarter, outscoring the
Lady Indians 20-5 to get the win.
McKenzie McAuliffe and Kala Weber led Sterling in scoring with nine
each.
Pawnee City’s leading scorer was Brooke Burgess with seven.
