Lady Jets vs Pawnee City Mudecas Tourney Sept. 14, 2007
The Pawnee
City Lady Indians downed the Sterling Lady Jets in straight sets,
25-21, 25-22, to finish tournament play with a 3-0 record and the
championship plaque, September 14, 2007.
Sterling coach Stan Karr said the Lady Jets' missed too many
“opportunities” to win the match. “We missed too many
serves,” Karr said. “We missed eight and it's hard to win ball
games when you miss that many.”
Karr said the Lady Jets went into Thursday's match a little tight
and without the confidence they had had in their two earlier
tournament contests. That combination let to unforced errors
for Sterling, Karr said. The Lady Jets also didn't show
enough different looks to Pawnee City on offense, Karr said.
“Our hitters didn't mix things up,' Karr said. “Pawnee City did a
really good job digging our hits. We were too predictable.”
Defensively, Karr said the Lady Jets we weren't moving. “We
were hesitant,” Karr said. “We were waiting for someone else to
make the plays.” Sterling's players did make some adjustments
defensively in the game, Karr said.
Karr said one key for the Lady Jets in any situation is working as
a team. “We have to work as a team,” Karr said. “We don't
really have one go-to player.”
The Sterling coach said he was glad his team got to the
championship game, adding the experience should benefit the team
later.
McKenzie McAuliffe led the Lady Jets' attack with six kills, while
Maddie Daehling and Courtney VanGroningen added five
each. Leading the Lady Jets in digs was Maddie Daehling with
16.
VanGroningen played
especially well as a freshman for the Lady Jets, Karr said.
“Courtney (VanGroningen) doesn't play like a freshman,” Karr said,
“which is good for us.”
Kala Weber topped the Sterling squad in set assists with 13 and ace
blocks with three. Karr said Weber is doing a good job this
season in her role as the team's No. 1 setter. “Kala (Weber)
has made major improvements already,” Karr said. “I'm pleased with
her progress so far.” Karr said he's been especially pleased
with Weber's ability to block on the right side.
